Details
속초SokchoSokcho is a port town in Gangwon Province on the East Sea. Its main draw is 설악산국립공원Seoraksan Gungnip GongwonSeoraksan National Park, whose gate area is a short bus ride from town. This guide covers the bus from Seoul, the park's trails and cable car, the beach, Abai Village and the market, with hours, fees and closing times checked against official sources in October 2026.
Sokcho at a glance
Sokcho is small enough to cover by city bus and on foot. The park entrance area, 소공원SogongwonSogongwon, the small park at the park gate, is in the Seorak-dong district west of town. The beach, harbour and market are in the town centre.
Who it suits
It suits hikers, foliage visitors and short-trip travellers who like sea views and a market. It is a poor fit if you need a rail link, because the trip is a long bus ride each way.
Where to stay
| Area | Good for |
|---|---|
| Near the express bus terminal and Sokcho Beach | Arrival and departure by bus, beach walks |
| Harbour and Abai Village side | The ferry, the harbour and the market on foot |
| Seorak-dong, near Sogongwon | An early start on the trails |
See where to stay for how to compare areas. If you plan to hike before sunrise, check the entry-time rule below first.
Getting there
By express bus. This is the standard route. KOBUS lists two Seoul departure points, and both go to the 속초SokchoSokcho express terminal.
| From | Departures a day | First / last | Time (KOBUS estimate) | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 서울경부Seoul GyeongbuSeoul Express Bus Terminal | 45 (Wed 21 Oct), 47 (Sat 24 Oct) | 06:00 / 23:30 | 2 h 20 min | ₩24,300 우등udeungDeluxe (most buses), ₩18,700 고속gosokStandard (3 buses), ₩31,500 프리미엄peurimieomPremium (9 buses), ₩29,100 late-night deluxe (22:00–23:30) |
| 동서울Dong SeoulDong Seoul Terminal | 15 | 07:00 / 20:30 | 2 h 30 min | ₩22,800 deluxe, ₩29,600 premium |
The return from Sokcho runs from 06:00 to 23:00 to Seoul Express Bus Terminal and from 06:45 to 20:30 to Dong Seoul on the sample day. Times and fares come from KOBUS's timetable lookup for 21 and 24 October 2026, and they can change by date. Only three buses a day are the cheaper standard class, between 08:20 and 18:20, so expect the deluxe fare for most trips. Sokcho's city page says the intercity bus from Sokcho to Dong Seoul takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, while KOBUS estimates 2 hours 15 minutes in that direction, so allow for traffic. Look up your own date on KOBUS. Intercity buses are sold on Txbus; this guide did not check their times.
The Seoul Express Bus Terminal stop is at Banpo-dong in Seocho-gu, and Dong Seoul is at Gangbyeon Station. In Sokcho the 고속버스터미널gosokbeoseu teomineolExpress bus terminal is at Donghae-daero 3994, about a five-minute walk from Sokcho Beach (Sokcho city). The 시외버스터미널sioebeoseu teomineolIntercity bus terminal is at Jangan-ro 16.
By train. There is no direct KTX to Sokcho, and Sokcho city lists only bus terminals on its transport page. The rail option is the KTX-Eum to Gangneung, then a bus north. Korail lists 111–131 minutes from Seoul Station and about ₩27,600 for a standard seat (see the Gangneung guide). This guide could not confirm bus times from Gangneung to Sokcho, because they are not on KOBUS, so treat the direct bus from Seoul as the default. Booking tips are in KTX and trains.
Getting around
City buses 7 and 7-1 serve Seoraksan, and VisitKorea says to take them from the Sokcho intercity bus terminal to Sogongwon. Sokcho's timetable files for these routes were last edited in November 2024, so check the stop and times in a map app (map apps) or ask the Public Transport Helper line, 080-850-9486 (weekdays 09:30–17:30). For other buses, see city buses, and for payment see T-money.
Top sights
Seoraksan National Park
Sogongwon is the gate to the main walks on the Sokcho side. Sokcho's own pages list admission to the Seorak-dong area as free. The page for Gwongeumseong lists adults ₩3,200–3,500, which conflicts with that, and KNPS's fee page for Seoraksan lists parking, cable car and camping charges but no entrance fee. Confirm at the gate or with the park office, 033-801-0900.
Parking at Sogongwon has a fee, but KNPS lists only an office number (033-636-4050), not a price. This guide did not confirm the rate.
Entry rule. KNPS bars entry to the trails from Sogongwon (to Ulsanbawi, the Towangseong Falls viewpoint, Biseondae and Gwongeumseong) from sunset until two hours before the next sunrise. Trails are also closed when the Korea Meteorological Administration issues a weather warning. Check trail status on the day.
Seorak Cable Car
The 설악케이블카Seorak KeibeulkaSeorak Cable Car climbs from Sogongwon to 권금성GwongeumseongGwongeumseong Fortress, a ride of about 5 minutes over 1,128 m to 699 m above sea level.

- Fare: adults ₩16,000 and children (37 months to elementary school) ₩12,000, return only. Under 36 months is free. The operator's discounts apply to domestic residents with proof.
- Hours: posted daily, because wind and weather change them. The site showed 08:00–17:00 for 21 October 2026.
- Tickets: bought on the day at the ticket office; there is no advance booking. There is no walking trail between the two stations, so you ride both ways.
- Cabins: no heating or cooling.
Ulsanbawi
울산바위UlsanbawiUlsanbawi Rock is a granite ridge with views of the sea and Sokcho. KNPS describes the route from Sinheungsa Temple past Heundeulbawi (the Rocking Rock) as 3.8 km one way, about 2 hours, with 7.6 km and about 4 hours for the round trip. The first 2.8 km to Heundeulbawi takes about 1 hour on a gentle path. The last 1.0 km takes about 1 hour on steep metal stairs, and KNPS warns of falling rocks on that section. Start early and plan to be back before the entry rule applies.
Biseondae
비선대BiseondaeBiseondae is a rock-walled valley. KNPS lists 3.0 km and about 1 hour 20 minutes one way from Sogongwon past Sinheungsa on a gentle path suitable for most walkers. An optional extra 0.6 km (about 40 minutes) of steep stairs leads to the Geumganggul cave. The full return to Geumganggul is 7.2 km and about 3 hours 20 minutes.
Sokcho Beach
속초해변Sokcho HaebyeonSokcho Beach is at Haeoreum-ro 186, free and open all year, with a pine walk behind it. Swimming is allowed only inside the marked buoys during the swimming season. Camping, cooking, pets and fireworks are banned on the sand.

Yeonggeumjeong
영금정YeonggeumjeongYeonggeumjeong is a pavilion on a rock shelf at the foot of the Sokcho lighthouse in Dongmyeong-dong. The city lists it as open at all times, open all year, and with no entrance fee. The lighthouse observation deck is about a 10-minute walk away.
Abai Village and the Gaetbae
아바이마을AbaimaeulAbai Village is a neighbourhood settled in the Korean War by refugees from Hamgyeong Province, now in North Korea. The city lists it as open 24 hours. You can cross from the town centre on the 갯배gaetbaeGaetbae, a hand-pulled ferry, which is pulled across the harbour channel along a cable.

- Hours: 05:00–23:00 from May to October and 05:30–22:30 from November to April, and weather can change them.
- Fare: ₩500 for adults, ₩300 for children, and free for Sokcho residents with ID. It carries up to 32 people. Pets are not allowed.
Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market
속초관광수산시장Sokcho Gwangwang SusansijangSokcho Tourist and Fishery Market (Jungang-ro 147beon-gil 16) is free to enter and listed as open at all times; individual shops keep their own hours. The raw-fish centre on the lower floor closes on the second Wednesday of the month. From the Gaetbae landing, Sokcho's walking map shows a route through the alleys and Hwangso Square to the market entrance.
Food
Abai Village is known for Hamgyeong-style dishes such as sundae (blood sausage) and naengmyeon, and the market for fried chicken and seafood. See ordering at a restaurant and the budget guide.
Seasons
- Autumn: the busiest time. The Korea Forest Service forecasts peak foliage on Seoraksan on 20 October 2026, and the Korea Tourism Organization forecast is 25 October, so treat dates as a range. See the autumn foliage guide.
- Late autumn: the upper trails are closed for fire season. In 2025 the Seoraksan National Park Office announced a closure from 15 November to 15 December on the high trails that lead to Daecheongbong from Gongnyong Ridge (Dinosaur Ridge) and Hangyeryeong. Sokcho's page for the Seorak-dong district lists the same dates as its closed period, while the news report describes only some upper trails, so the sources differ on how much is shut. This guide could not find KNPS's 2026 notice. Check the park office before you go, and see Korea in November.
- Summer and winter: the beach is busy in the swimming season. The cable car can stop in strong wind or bad weather.
Monthly weather is in weather by month.
A sample day
| Time | Plan | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| 06:30 | Bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal | About 2 hours 20 minutes |
| 09:00 | Arrive at Sokcho express terminal | City bus 7 or 7-1 toward Seoraksan |
| 10:00 | Cable car to Gwongeumseong (check it is running) | Walk from Sogongwon |
| 11:30 | Walk toward Biseondae and back | About 2 hours 40 minutes of walking |
| 14:30 | Bus back to town, then Sokcho Beach and Yeonggeumjeong | City bus or taxi |
| 16:30 | Gaetbae to Abai Village, then the market | On foot |
| 19:00 | Walk back to the express terminal for the return bus | Bus; last Seoul Express departure 23:00 on the sample day |
For Ulsanbawi, replace the cable car and Biseondae with the 4-hour round trip. Check sunset, because the park bars trail entry after dark.
Common mistakes
- Starting a trail late. KNPS stops entry from sunset until two hours before sunrise, and weather warnings close trails.
- Expecting a ticket for a single cable car leg. Only return tickets are sold, and there is no booking.
- Planning a high-peak hike in late autumn. Upper trails usually close from 15 November.
- Assuming a train. There is no rail line to Sokcho.
Questions and answers
Is Sokcho a day trip from Seoul?
Yes, but it is long. The bus takes about 2 hours 20 minutes each way, and the last bus back leaves Sokcho at 23:00 on the sample day. A night in Sokcho lets you hike or ride the cable car without rushing.
Is Seoraksan free to enter?
Sokcho's city page lists the Seorak-dong area as free, but another city page lists adult tickets of ₩3,200–3,500. KNPS's fee page shows no entrance fee. Confirm with the park office on 033-801-0900.
Does the cable car run every day?
It runs year-round when weather allows. Hours change daily, and it can stop in strong wind. Check the operator's page on the day.
