Details
전주JeonjuJeonju is a mid-sized city in the south-west, known for its hanok village, for bibimbap, and for the long meals that come with makgeolli. The sights are packed into a few walkable streets, so Jeonju works well as an overnight trip. This guide covers the KTX, the sights with their hours and fees, food, and manners at the sights. Facts were checked against official sources in October 2026.
Jeonju at a glance
The old centre is 전주한옥마을Jeonju Hanok MaeulJeonju Hanok Village, which VisitKorea describes as Korea's largest urban hanok village, with about 700 buildings. Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Jeondong Cathedral and Omokdae are all inside or beside it. Nambu Market and its night market are a short walk south across the stream. The KTX station is away from the centre, so you need a bus or taxi first.
Where to stay
| Area | Good for |
|---|---|
| Hanok Village | Hanok stays, early and late walks when day visitors leave |
| Near Nambu Market | Night market, a short walk to the village |
| Near Jeonju Station | Early trains; a bus or taxi to the sights |
Ask any hanok stay about heating, floor bedding and check-in time before you go. See where to stay for general advice.
Getting there
By KTX. Most Jeonju trains leave from 용산YongsanYongsan Station, not Seoul Station. In Korail's timetable from 1 November 2026, the 10 November sample day has 19 trains from Yongsan to Jeonju, between 05:08 and 21:48. The fastest takes 1 hour 28 minutes, the median is about 1 hour 43 minutes, and the slowest about 2 hours 28 minutes. Only 5 trains run from Seoul Station (first 06:44, last 18:36) and 4 from Suseo, so Yongsan is the practical start. Korail's fare table of 1 September 2026 gives ₩31,000–₩31,600 from Yongsan, depending on the route the train takes, and ₩31,300–₩31,900 from Seoul Station. Booking is covered in KTX and trains.
Station to the village. The official Hanok Village site lists buses 112, 79, 508, 536, 542, 545, 546, 101, 119 and 999 from the platform outside the station to the stop in front of Jeondong Cathedral, about 25 minutes. A taxi is estimated at ₩6,000–₩7,000. Older VisitKorea articles give a bus time of about 30 minutes and a taxi time of about 20 minutes; the numbers are close, but bus routes change, so check the current route in a map app (map apps).
Getting around
The village sights are within walking distance of each other, and Nambu Market is a short walk away. In the village, a shuttle runs 10:00–19:00 between a free car park and the village centre (Route A daily, Route B at weekends and public holidays only). Jeonju also runs a tourist taxi; its Course A starts at Jeonju Station and ends at the Hanok Village. Cards work on city buses (T-money).
Top sights
Fees are for adults. Check each sight's hours, because sources sometimes differ.
Jeonju Hanok Village
Free to enter and open all year. Address: 99 Girin-daero. People live here: keep your voice down in the lanes after dark and do not walk into private yards. The tourist information centre is open 24 hours on +82-63-282-1330. Parking is paid at some car parks and free at others, so check the village site.

Gyeonggijeon Shrine
경기전GyeonggijeonGyeonggijeon Shrine (44 Taejo-ro) is a shrine compound in the middle of the village (VisitKorea).
- Hours (VisitKorea): 09:00–19:00 from March to May and in September–October, 09:00–20:00 from June to August, and 09:00–18:00 from November to February. Last admission is one hour before closing.
- Closed: none, open all year.
- Admission: adults ₩3,000, teenagers ₩2,000, children ₩1,000. Free for children 6 and under, adults 65 and over, and on the last Wednesday of each month.
- Conflict: an older VisitKorea listing showed later hours and free entry for people in hanbok. The current page does not mention it. Ask at the ticket office before you rely on it.
Omokdae
오목대OmokdaeOmokdae is a pavilion on a small hill above the village, reached by a short walk up a lantern-lit path. Visitors say you look out over the tiled roofs. Entry is free and listings describe it as open all year. Take your shoes off before you sit in the pavilion.

Jeondong Cathedral
전동성당Jeondong SeongdangJeondong Cathedral (51 Taejo-ro) is a Romanesque and Byzantine-style Catholic church next to Gyeonggijeon. Entry is free. It is a working church, and you cannot go in during Mass. VisitKorea lists Masses on Sunday at 06:00, 09:00, 10:30 and 17:00, and on Saturday at 16:00 and 18:00. Weekday Masses are at 06:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 11:00 from Tuesday to Thursday. Visiting hours conflict between sources: 09:00–17:00 or 09:00–18:00, and the city's 2023 page lists Monday as closed. Call +82-63-284-3222 or check jeondong.or.kr.
Nambu Market and the night market
남부시장Nambu SijangNambu Market (Pungnammun 1-gil) opens about 09:30–23:00, but hours and closing days depend on each shop (VisitKorea). The 야시장yasijangNight market runs on Fridays and Saturdays. A VisitKorea article dated 23 September 2026 says it runs 17:00–24:00 on a car-free 100 m section of Pungnammun 2-gil, with shared tables in the road. Visit Jeonju's monthly page gives 17:00–23:00. Many stalls close after 23:00 when they sell out, and lines form early. A separate early-morning market, the Dawn Goblin Market, runs from about 04:00 to 10:00 near Cheonbyeon Stream (Visit Jeonju).
Food
Bibimbap. 비빔밥bibimbapMixed rice is Jeonju's best-known dish. Visit Jeonju describes the local version as rice cooked in beef broth, topped with seasoned vegetables, bean sprouts, yellow mung-bean jelly and often raw beef, served with gochujang. Tell staff if you do not eat raw beef. Ordering tips are in ordering at a restaurant.
Makgeolli. 막걸리makgeolliRice wine is a milky rice wine. Jeonju is known for bars where you order a kettle and the kitchen sends out a table of side dishes with it. The number of side dishes varies by bar, and each extra kettle usually brings a new round, so ask what the table includes. Makgeolli is alcohol: only drink if you are of legal age, and carry ID.
Hanbok and manners at the sights
Hanbok shops are common around the village. You do not need hanbok to enter any sight. If you rent, wear comfortable shoes for the stone paths, and be ready to take them off at pavilions such as Omokdae. Do not enter Jeondong Cathedral during Mass, and keep photos of other visitors to a minimum.
Seasons
- Spring: Visit Jeonju has a flower tour of the city; white fringe trees line the Palbok-dong railroad in May.
- Summer: Gyeonggijeon is open until 20:00 from June to August.
- Autumn: the village site lists weekly evening events at Gyeonggijeon on Fridays from September to November. Check dates first.
- Winter: Gyeonggijeon closes at 18:00 from November to February.
Monthly weather is in weather by month.
