Details
경주GyeongjuGyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom. Grassy royal tombs sit in the middle of town, and Bulguksa and Seokguram, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, lie on the hills to the east. The main sights fit in two days. This guide covers how to arrive, how to move between the KTX station and the sights, and what each place costs and when it opens. Facts were checked against official sources in October 2026.
Gyeongju at a glance
The city has three clusters. The downtown tomb area has Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Hwangnidan-gil and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, all within a few kilometres of each other. Bulguksa and Seokguram are on the hills south-east of town. The Bomun Tourist Complex is a lakeside resort area further east. The KTX station is north-west of all three, in the countryside.
Where to stay
| Area | Good for |
|---|---|
| Hwangnidan-gil and Daereungwon | Walking to the tombs, Cheomseongdae and cafés; many hanok guesthouses (VisitKorea) |
| Near Bulguksa | Early starts at the temple |
| Bomun Tourist Complex | Resort-style hotels by the lake; linked to the KTX station by a direct city bus |
| Near the KTX station | Short stops between trains; the station is outside town |
For a first visit, stay in the downtown tomb area. You can walk to the night sights without a bus. See where to stay for how to compare hotels.
Getting there
By KTX. Korail's timetable from 1 November 2026 lists these services from Seoul. The 10 November 2026 sample day has 29 trains from Seoul Station, between 05:13 and 21:33. The fastest takes 1 hour 58 minutes and the median is 2 hours 14 minutes. The slowest takes about 3 hours 17 minutes. The city's own page says about 2 hours 10 minutes, which matches the typical train. A standard seat from Seoul Station costs ₩44,500 in Korail's fare table of 1 September 2026. Slower trains routed via Suwon are listed at ₩38,000. Trains from 수서SuseoSuseo Station (the former SRT) also stop here; the 17 trains on the sample day start at 05:30 and the first takes about 2 hours. Booking is covered in KTX and trains. From Busan the ride is about 30 minutes, and from Dongdaegu about 20 minutes (Gyeongju city).
Station name. Korail's timetable and the city's visitor page call the KTX stop 경주GyeongjuGyeongju Station. Maps, bus signs and older guides still call it 신경주역Singyeongju-yeokSingyeongju Station. They are the same place, in Geoncheon-eup. The city page also lists a separate station, Seogyeongju, so check the station name on your ticket.
By express bus. Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal is at 2 Taejong-ro 685beon-gil, in the downtown area, and tickets are sold through KOBUS or BUSTAGO. This guide did not confirm Seoul–Gyeongju bus times or fares, so check them on KOBUS.
Getting around
From the KTX station
- Bus 60 or 61 to the Cheomseongdae stop takes about 40 minutes (city visitor page).
- Taxi takes about 20 minutes on the same page.
- Bus 700, 710 and 711 are the direct links to Bulguksa and Bomun. A city notice from February 2023 says 710 runs from the station to the Bomun complex and 711 passes Tongil-jeon and Bulguksa, roughly every 30 minutes. That notice is more than three years old, so check current routes in a map app (map apps) or on the Gyeongju traffic information centre.
Transit cards work on city buses; see T-money. Ask the information office at the station or at Bulguksa about current routes and fares.
Bikes
The downtown sights sit on flat ground, so cycling suits them. Private shops near the main gate of Daereungwon rent bikes by the hour, with prices set by each shop. Gyeongju also has a public bike scheme called Tasilla (VisitKorea).
Taxi
Taxis work well for Bulguksa and Seokguram when two or more of you share. See taxis.

Common mistakes
- Expecting the KTX station to be downtown. It is about 40 minutes by bus from Cheomseongdae.
- Arriving at Wolji just before closing. Last tickets are at 21:30 and queues can block entry.
- Going to Bulguksa late in winter. Entry stops at 17:00 from November to January.
- Paying for Bulguksa from an old guide. It is free.
Questions and answers
Is Gyeongju worth a day trip from Seoul?
It is possible: the first KTX leaves Seoul Station at 05:13 and the trip is about two hours each way. You will see Bulguksa and the downtown tombs, but not Wolji at night. One night is better.
Do I need a car?
No. Buses, taxis and bikes cover the main sights. A car helps for places further out.
How much does it cost to see the main sights?
Bulguksa, Seokguram and Cheomseongdae are free. Cheonmachong and Wolji Pond are ₩3,000 each for adults.
