Details
A Korean convenience store, 편의점pyeonuijeomConvenience store, is where you can get a cheap hot meal, a drink, an umbrella and a transit-card top-up in one stop. The routine is simple once you know it: choose, pay, then use the heating station yourself. This guide covers that routine and the Korean words on the tags and machines.

Before you start
- A card and some cash. Cards work for most purchases. T-money top-ups at the counter are paid in won cash (T-money).
- ID if you plan to buy alcohol or tobacco. Under the Juvenile Protection Act, people under 19 count as youth, except those who have reached 1 January of the year they turn 19 (law.go.kr). Carry your passport if you look young.
- A small bag. Staff will ask if you need one. A reusable bag saves the question.
Step by step
Step 1 — Find what you want
The chilled shelves hold ready meals. Look for these words on the labels:
- 도시락dosirakLunchbox: rice with several sides in one tray. Heat it before eating.
- 삼각김밥samgak gimbapTriangle rice ball: rice wrapped in seaweed. Eat it cold or heat it briefly. The wrapper opens in numbered steps: pull tab 1 down the middle, then pull the two sides off.
- 컵라면keomnamyeonCup noodles: on the dry shelves, often next to the hot-water station.
Heating instructions are printed on the pack, usually as a time next to 전자레인지jeonjareinjiMicrowave and a wattage. Some packs tell you to open a corner of the film or lid before heating.
Step 2 — Read the deal tags
Shelf tags with a colored label mark promotions, called 행사 상품haengsa sangpumPromotion items.
- 1+1won peulleoseu wonBuy one, get one free: take two, pay for one.
- 2+1tu peulleoseu wonBuy two, get one free: take three, pay for two.
Unless the tag says otherwise, the free item must be the same product, size and flavor. The register applies the discount automatically, but only if you bring all the items to the counter. Deals change, often monthly, so a tag photographed online last month may not apply today.
Step 3 — Pay at the counter
Bring everything to the counter, including food you want to heat. Staff may ask:
- 봉투 필요하세요?bongtu piryohaseyo?Do you need a bag?
- 영수증 드릴까요?yeongsujeung deurilkkayo?Would you like the receipt?
You can answer with a nod or a shake of the head. Tap or insert your card on the reader facing you.
Step 4 — Heat food in the microwave
The microwave is at a self-service counter, usually near the window or the back wall. You use it yourself after paying.
- Open the vent or corner of the film if the pack says so.
- Set the time shown on the pack for the wattage written on the microwave.
- Wait, then take the tray out carefully. It gets hot.
- Wipe up any spills for the next person.
Do not put a cup of noodles in the microwave unless the pack says 전자레인지 가능jeonjareinji ganeungMicrowave-safe. Use the hot-water dispenser instead.
Step 5 — Add hot water to cup noodles
Find the dispenser marked 온수onsuHot water. Open the lid to the dotted line, add the seasoning packets the pack asks for, and fill to the line printed inside the cup, 물 붓는 선mul bunneun seonWater line. Close the lid and wait for the time on the pack. Chopsticks and wooden forks are usually in a box near the dispenser.
Step 6 — Eat and sort your trash
Some stores have a counter or a few stools; many have none. If seating matters, look before you buy.
Bins near the self-service counter are split by type. Pour leftover soup into the sink or slot marked 국물 버리는 곳gungmul beorineun gotPour leftover soup here. Then sort the rest:
- 일반쓰레기ilban sseuregiGeneral waste
- 플라스틱peullaseutikPlastic
- 캔kaenCans
Step 7 — Buy or top up a T-money card
T-money cards are sold at GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, emart24 and other chains (T-money). Stores with a T-money sticker top up cards in cash, from ₩1,000 to ₩90,000 at a time, up to a ₩500,000 balance (T-money, checked October 2026).
Hand the card and the cash to staff and say 티머니 충전해 주세요timeoni chungjeonhae juseyoPlease top up my T-money, with the amount, for example 만 원man won10,000 won. Staff tap the card on their reader and hand it back. Check the balance on the receipt.
At GS25 and CU you can also load the change from a cash purchase onto the card, down to ₩10. Ask for 잔돈 충전jandon chungjeonTop up with my change. For refunds and card types, see the T-money guide.

Common problems
- Staff stop you at the microwave. You probably have not paid yet. Pay first, then heat.
- The 1+1 discount did not appear. Check that both items are exactly the same product. If they are, show the shelf tag to staff.
- The microwave sparks. Stop it. Foil or metal lids must come off before heating.
- No seats. Many stores are grab-and-go. A park bench or your room may be the better option.
- Your card is declined at the counter. Try inserting the chip, or pay with another card or cash. For card tips, see money, cash and cards.
- Staff ask for ID when you buy beer. This is normal under the age rules above. Show your passport.
Questions and answers
Do I have to pay before using the microwave?
Yes. Bring the food to the counter first. After you pay, the microwave and hot water are self-service.
Does 1+1 work with two different flavors?
Usually not. The tag applies to the same product unless it says the items can be mixed. Read the tag or ask staff.
How old do I have to be to buy alcohol?
You must not be a "youth" under the Juvenile Protection Act: under 19, unless 1 January of the year you turn 19 has passed. Staff can ask for ID, so carry your passport.
Can I smoke outside the store?
Only where it is allowed. Smoking in a designated no-smoking area can bring a fine of up to ₩100,000 under the National Health Promotion Act (law.go.kr). Look for 금연geumyeonNo smoking signs.
Can I top up T-money with a card?
Not with a foreign card. T-money lists cash for convenience-store top-ups; its only card top-ups are for cards issued by Woori Bank (T-money). Bring won in cash.
