Summary
At Incheon you pass quarantine, then immigration, where foreigners aged 17 or over give two index fingerprints and a face photo. Then you collect your bags and pass customs. As of October 2026 you need a customs form only if you have goods to declare. Declare cash over USD 10,000 in total and any meat, fruit or plants. Details
Arrival at Incheon International Airport follows a fixed order: quarantine, immigration, baggage claim, customs, then the arrivals hall. Queue times vary with the hour and the number of flights. This guide explains each stop, what officers check, and which items you must declare.
Before you start
Have these ready before you leave the plane:
- Passport, and your visa if you have one
- K-ETA approval or e-Arrival card confirmation screenshot, depending on your passport. See the entry guide
- The address of your first night's stay in English, saved offline
- Return or onward ticket details
- A rough total of the cash you carry, in all currencies
Step by step
Step 1 — Follow the arrival signs
Leave the aircraft and follow the 입국ipgukArrivals signs. If you are connecting to another flight without entering Korea, follow 환승hwanseungTransfer instead. At some gates you take the airport's shuttle train to the main terminal first.
Step 2 — Quarantine
You first pass 검역geomyeokQuarantine. Most travelers just keep walking. If you visited a quarantine-management region and have symptoms such as fever or cough, you must report it. You can do this online through Q-CODE from 7 days before arrival, or at a kiosk on site. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) warns of fines of up to KRW 10 million for not reporting or for false reports.
Step 3 — Immigration
At 입국심사ipguk simsaImmigration, join the 외국인oeguginForeigners lanes. Hand over your passport. If you are 17 or older, you place both index fingers on the scanner and look at the camera. Korean law requires this for foreign visitors, with narrow exceptions such as diplomats.
The officer may ask short questions:
- What is the purpose of your visit?
- How long will you stay?
- Where are you staying?
- Do you have a return ticket?
Answer briefly and truthfully. Show your booking or ticket if asked. K-ETA approval, a visa or an arrival card does not guarantee entry. The officer makes the final decision.
Automated gates: some visitors can use 자동출입국심사jadong churipguk simsaSmart Entry Service instead. As of October 2026, the Ministry of Justice offers this to visa-free visitors aged 17 or over from 42 countries, who register at a center in the arrivals area at Incheon or Jeju airport. Eligibility depends on nationality, so check the signs and the HiKorea website.
Step 4 — Baggage claim
Check the belt number on the screens after immigration, then go down to 수하물 찾는 곳suhamul channeun gotBaggage claim. If your bag is missing or damaged, report it before you leave the baggage claim area. Incheon Airport's website has a page on lost and damaged baggage.
Step 5 — Customs
At 세관segwanCustoms there are two kinds of lanes:
- 신고물품 없음singo mulpum eopseumNothing to declare: no form needed. Officers may still inspect your bags.
- 신고물품 있음singo mulpum isseumGoods to declare: hand in a declaration on paper or through the Korea Customs Service mobile declaration.
You have goods to declare if you carry any of the following:
- Means of payment worth more than USD 10,000 in total. This includes foreign currency, Korean won and checks.
- Goods over the duty-free allowance. See the table below.
- Meat products, fruit, vegetables, plants or seeds.
- Medicines that may be misused, and narcotic or psychotropic drugs.
Step 6 — Animal and plant quarantine
Food and plants are checked by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) at the airport. Do not bring raw meat, ham, sausages or jerky. If you have them anyway, declare them. Undeclared meat products can bring a fine of up to KRW 10 million. That rule has applied since 1 June 2019 because of African swine fever. Declare fresh fruit, vegetables and seeds for inspection. Banned produce is destroyed on the spot, and soil is banned outright. The APQA gives mango, papaya, orange, lychee and grapes as examples of banned produce.
Step 7 — The arrivals hall
Once through customs, you are in the arrivals hall. From there, see Incheon Airport to Seoul for trains, buses and taxis.
Customs limits
| Item | Rule (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Cash and other means of payment | Declare if the total exceeds USD 10,000 equivalent |
| Duty-free allowance | USD 800 per person |
| Alcohol (on top of the USD 800) | Up to 2 litres in total, worth no more than USD 400 |
| Cigarettes | 200 |
| E-cigarette liquid | 20 ml of nicotine liquid |
| Perfume | 100 ml |
| Under 19 years old | No alcohol or tobacco allowance |
| Meat products | Do not bring; declare if carried; fine up to KRW 10 million |
| Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds | Declare for inspection; some are banned |
Declaring voluntarily can reduce the duty you pay by 30%. If customs finds undeclared goods, you pay a 40% penalty on top of the duty, or 60% for repeat cases within 2 years.
Common problems
- Not declaring cash. Declare it on the way in. You cannot get the declaration certificate after you leave the arrivals area. Undeclared amounts up to USD 30,000 bring an administrative fine. Larger amounts can lead to up to 1 year in prison or a fine of up to KRW 100 million.
- Snacks with meat. Ham, sausages and jerky count as meat products. When unsure, declare.
- No accommodation address. Officers commonly ask where you are staying. Keep the address offline.
- Arrival card not filed. If you need one and forgot, you can still submit the e-Arrival card on your phone before you reach the counter.
- Bringing prescription medicine. Read pharmacy and hospital for the rules on bringing medicine into Korea.
Questions and answers
What do Korean immigration officers ask?
Usually your purpose of visit, length of stay, accommodation and return ticket. Short, true answers are enough.
Do I have to fill in a customs form?
Only if you have goods to declare. The Korea Customs Service dropped the form for travelers with nothing to declare from 1 May 2023. Some older English pages on the customs website still say otherwise.
Can I bring Korean won or dollars in cash?
Yes. The rule is about declaring: if the total of all cash and checks is above USD 10,000, declare it at customs.
Are fingerprints taken every time?
Foreign visitors aged 17 or over give fingerprints and a face photo at entry. Under-17s are exempt.
Can I use automated gates when I leave Korea?
Incheon Airport states that short-term foreign visitors aged 17 or over may use the automated departure gates without registering in advance.
Who can help me at the airport?
Incheon Airport's customer center is reachable at 1577-2600 (07:00–22:00 daily). For tourism help in several languages, call the 1330 travel hotline. See emergency numbers and help.
